A 15-year-old teenager, Oluwatobi Lawal, Friday, died following a tanker explosion that erupted in the wee hours of the day at Ajegunle Bus-Stop, Alagbado, on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.

Three vehicles were also burnt beyond recognition and 24 makeshift shops were razed after the tanker laden with 45,000 litres of PMS crashed,  and spilled its contents on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.

Reports have it that the victim was preparing for the West African Examination (WAEC) and UTME in May when the unfortunate incident occurred.

The explosion was said to have rocked the area after a group of people stampede the scene and scooped up the spilled contents.

The Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Adeseye Margaret, in a statement on Friday, said the inferno had been quelled by the combined effort of Agege, Ikeja and Alausa Fire crews.

She confirmed that the tanker lost its balance while trying to make a turn to Ayinde Oil Filling Station, its destination.

Margaret said the issue was worsened by the activities of scoopers. “The situation is, however, being brought under control by the Agege, Ikeja and Alausa Fire Crews of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service with the use of tactical Firefighting application of Chemical Foam Compound to suppress the Fire.

“The public is, hereby, assured that the situation is under control as the process of mopping up and evacuation of the remains of the Fire is ongoing.”

The director, however, cautioned residents to travel with the inbound vehicular traffic diversion.
