The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intercepted 22 blocks of heroin concealed in baby food packs and valued at over N4.5 billion at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMI) Lagos.

The suspects — Chike Eweni was arrested on Thursday, June 30 at a logistics warehouse in Ajao Estate, Ikeja while Muyiwa Bolujoko was nabbed on June 27 at the Lagos airport.

Eweni is said to distribute the substance to his South African-based partner. Bolujoko, a former driver with BRT, allegedly excreted 90 pallets of drugs.

The Director, Media and Advocacy, NDLEA, Mr Femi Babafemi, announced this in a statement he issued on Sunday, July 3rd in Abuja.

He said the NDLEA officers at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos discovered the consignment concealed in packs of baby food.

While noting that the drug weighed 23.55 kilograms, Babafemi said the consignment came from Johannesburg, South Africa, on board a South African Airways flight on Wednesday, June 29.

This, he said, was part of the consolidated cargo that arrived at the Skyway Aviation Handling Company Plc import shed of the Lagos airport.

“After a series of follow-up operations that led to the arrest of two freight agents, the actual receiver of the drug consignment was Eweni, he added.

During a preliminary interview, Babafemi confirmed that the suspect claimed that he is also into fish farming.

Earlier on June 27, the NDLEA officers arrested Bolujoko for ingesting 90 pellets of cocaine.

According to Babafemi, Bolujoko was apprehended at the screening point before boarding a Qatar Airways flight from Doha to Sharjah, “With his trip expected to terminate in Dubai, the UAE”, Babafemi outlined.

He added that the 39-year-old was placed under excretion observation after a body scan result confirmed the drug ingestion.

While in custody, the suspect was said to have excreted the 90 pellets in four excretions.

He claimed he left his N60,000 per month job as a BRT driver in February and decided to work as a drug courier to raise funds to buy a shuttle bus called ‘Korope’ to continue his transport business in Lagos.
