The Ebonyi State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has suspended its Chairman, Okorie Tochukwu over alleged diversion of N53 million belonging to the party.

The State Working Committee said it took the decision, claiming that Tochukwu took the money without the consent of others who are signatories to the account.

The state PDP Deputy Chairman, Ifeanyi Nworie, stated this after the committee’s emergency meeting in Abakaliki on Monday.

According to him, the suspension was for a period of one month. Nworie noted that the chairman was also suspended because of his failure to organise executive meetings for a period of four months since he was reinstated by the Court of Appeal in Abuja.

Clarifying how the SWC came about the decision, Nworie said they reviewed the activities of their chairman, Tochukwu Okorie and issues of his misconduct.

He added: “The chairman has failed to organise a meeting for more than four months which is against the party’s constitution.

“The Deputy Chairman, the Legal Adviser, the Publicity Secretary, and the Women Leader were among those at the Emergency meeting.”

Meanwhile, the Court of Appeal in Abuja had ordered the reinstatement of Tochukwu as Chairman of PDP in Ebonyi State and sacked Silas Onu. He was formerly the occupant of the position.

In his reaction, Okorie described it as illegal, insisting it is only the national leadership that can take such a decision.

He further declared that he remains a member of the National Executive Council of the party, hence no member of the state working committee has the power to suspend him.

On his alleged gross misconduct, he said, “I am the chairman as directed by the court. I have the prerogative power to access the party’s account in carrying out its activities”.
