…Maximum driving speed at 100km per hour

President Muhammadu Buhari has cautioned that anyone caught abusing roads constructed by the federal government would be dealt with.

Road abuse, he listed, include overloading of vehicles and trucks which accelerates pavement damage, spilling of petroleum products which dissolves all the components and allows water to penetrate, and converting the road shoulders to parking places that propel road failure.

Buhari said the purpose of building the roads is to boost economic growth and development.

He, however, lamented that the abusers are making the efforts of the government futile.

The president, who was represented by the Minister of Power, Abubakar Aliyu, gave the warning at the official commissioning and handing over of a 55-kilometre road linking Nguru-Gashu’a-Bayamari in Yobe State.

He expressed faith in the longevity of the road if not abused. “We must all do our best to avoid these practices. Report them when they occur and act lawfully to stop them.”

The president further explained that for the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) that drive economic growth, the 55-kilometre road is also a statement of economic efficiency and ease of doing business.

He emphasised: “This is because the travel time before the construction has reduced since the completion of this road.

Buhari reminded motorists and others plying the new road that the maximum driving speed on the road and other federal highways nationwide is 100 kilometres per hour.

“For your safety and that of other road users, I implore you not to exceed 100 kilometres per hour. We want you alive to witness and be part of the prosperity and promise of Nigeria,” he appealed.
