The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Wednesday, took its protest to the National Assembly Abuja in solidarity with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) over the lingering strike in tertiary institutions.

Before the Labour Union arrived at the Legislative House, security had been beefed up all over the complex.

The human and vehicular traffic was massive with motorists finding it difficult to enter the complex.

The Senate proceedings which started at about 11 am with the opening prayer by the Senate President, Dr Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan went into a closed-door session, a few minutes after the NLC arrived at the complex.

Wednesday’s protest was led by the National President of NLC, Comrade Ayuba Wabba.

Also, the students and their leadership were part of the demonstration. Other bodies present include, the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU), the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASUU), and the leadership of the National Youth Council.

Over five months ago, the university lecturers had shut down public institution over the inability of the Federal Government to implement the agreements it made with ASUU in 2009 as well as the refusal of the current administration to exempt lecturers from the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System.
