Four bodies, Saturday, were recovered after a boat capsized in the Ojo area of Lagos, as 12 people remain missing.
The bodies include a 52-year-old male and a 20-year-old female in the recovery operations ongoing.
The accident was said to be a result of a W19 passenger Fibre boat, which took off from Mile 2 to Ibeshe in Ojo axis with 16 passengers.
According to the Acting Coordinator of the Lagos Territorial Office of the Agency, Mr Ibrahim Farinloye, the boat capsized due to operation at night against the inland waterways’ rules.
Confirming that the incident happened at 7.45pm, Farinloye said the the tide of the water drifted the boat to a stationary barge which caused the boat to overturn.
Marine Police, NIWA, LASWA and volunteers were said to have swung into action to rescue some of the victims. “This was to no avail,” he bemoaned.
NEMA noted that it is yet to confirm if all the passengers including the captain were wearing life jackets, as some passengers claimed that some of them were wearing their life jackets, which may not be effective.
Recovery operations are still ongoing. The NEMA coordinator noted.
